The Pearl River Fire Department conduced its yearly PSS (Personal Safety System) training. The Petzl Exo Personal Safety System provides Pearl River’s firefighters with a state of the art “bail out” device with is capable of assisting a firefighter in rapid escape in severe conditions. The PSS systems were sought for after the tragic events of “Black Sunday” when six New York City Firefighters, responding to a three-alarm fire, became trapped in a blazing Bronx apartment building. Four of the firefighters were seriously injured as they attempted to escape out a fourth story window and the two other suffered fatal injuries after falling nearly 50 feet. The Pearl River Fire Department has incorporated the same PSS device that the New York City Fire Department uses to protect their members.
